Road rage victim Asheley Jewell, 15, focus of Ga. vigil

Vigil for Asheley Jewell, Fulton County, Ga., Saturday, March 12, 2011 WGCL

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Family and friends of Asheley Jewell held a vigil Saturday night at the site where police say the 15-year-old was shot and critically wounded during a road rage incident one week ago.

Police have not made an arrest in the case. Jewell's family said they hope Saturday's vigil will draw attention to the shooting and lead to a tip that will break open the case, reported CBS affiliate WGCL.

"Asheley was in a car with some of her girlfriends. They had just left to get something to eat when they were harassed by another vehicle. The car chased them and fired several times into their vehicle," Ebony Phillips, Jewell's aunt, told the station.

Jewell was shot in the back of the head. Her girlfriends and a 7-month-old baby escaped unharmed.

Her family told WGCL said the 15-year-old was in critical condition at Grady Hospital.

"She is fighting but it's just hard to see her that way. It hurts so bad, I can't even tell you how bad it hurts. It's awful," said Bridgette Jewell, Asheley's mother.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477. The family has also set up a Facebook page, "Justice for Asheley Jewell."
