Ridley Scott to direct a new "Blade Runner" movie
(CBS) Ridley Scott is sticking to science fiction for his next film, reportedly a new "Blade Runner" movie.
According to Deadline, the film will be Scott's next project. He has some experience making new movies related to his previous work; Scott's upcoming "Prometheus," starring Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender and coming out June 8, 2012, has been described as both a cousin and a prequel to "Alien," the 1979 feature that put Scott on the map.
As for the new "Blade Runner," it's unclear whether the project is a prequel or a sequel to the 1982 film. The original - and its iterations - has vocal proponents and detractors. Harrison Ford stars as a "blade runner," a retired cop who hunts down and kills rogue replicants (organic robots that look and act human).
The original didn't do big business at the box office during its initial run but in the years since it's become revered, with multiple re-releases and alternate cuts. (There's a five-disc Blu-Ray set that features five versions of the film: Scott's "final cut," the 1982 American version, the 1982 international version, a 1992 "director's cut" and a workprint version.)
And no doubt "Blade Runner" has been hugely influential. You can also thank it (and Scott) for ensuring that many sci-fi films in its wake would feature a bleak, rainy, dystopian future. The movie's visuals were groundbreaking and they still hold up.
Deadline reports the new film will not be a remake. No word on whether Ford will reprise his role as Deckard.
