Richard Strum, Chicago man, convicted of reckless homicide in car crash that killed mother and teenage son
(CBS) CHICAGO - A 36-year-old man was convicted Thursday in the 2011 car crash in Chicago's Jefferson Park neighborhood that killed a mother and her teenage son, reports CBS Chicago.
Cook County prosecutors say Richard Strum was driving his Ford Mustang with marijuana in his system when he crashed into Claudia Delia's parked car, according to CBS Chicago.
The collision took place on August 9, 2011. Delia, 35, and her 16-year-old son, Bryan Delia, who was in the passenger seat of the vehicle, were killed. According to the station, Delia's stepson, toddler son and a family friend were also injured in the accident.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Strum was convicted of reckless homicide and aggravated driving with cannabis in his urine. He was reportedly acquitted of DUI charges.
According to CBS Chicago, the defense argued that Strum was not intoxicated and that it was an "accident."
Michelle Spizzirri, a prosecutor in the case, argued it was a criminal act, saying, "The family does not need condolences. The family needs justice."
Strum faces six to 28 years behind bars.
