Retirement: Mutual Funds vs CDs?

I kept my poor crew out for hours in the cold, before finding a great question for this segment of Editor at Large. The lovely (and unsuspecting Renee) wants to know whether to invest her retirement money in mutual funds or CDs and follows up with a question about rolling over her old account.
