Rescuers use cellphone signal to find teens clinging to side of cliff
SAN FRANCISCO -- Two teen siblings were rescued after calling for help while they clung to a cliff after tumbling from a scenic lookout in San Francisco's Lands End park Thursday afternoon, according to a San Francisco fire dispatcher, reports CBS San Francisco KPIX.
The brother and sister, 15 and 16 years old, were hiking when they fell from the side of the cliff. They used a cellphone while holding on to the cliff side to call firefighters. A dispatcher told KPIX the call came in Thursday at 4:42 p.m.
Firefighters triangulated their approximate location using the signal from cellphone towers because the teens weren't exactly sure where they were. Rescue crews started hiking down to the area, while a rescue boat was able to spot them from the water.
KPIX reports that once the siblings were located, firefighters worked quickly to pull them back to the top of the cliff. They were back on their feet by 6 p.m., just a little over an hour after they had placed the call.
Both teens were checked out by paramedics, and according to the dispatcher, neither was seriously injured.
