Reports of Loughner's Racist Connection False

Adding to the evidence that suspected Tucson shooter Jared Loughner may have just been a disturbed lone wolf, a law enforcement official in Arizona has disavowed a document that had linked him to American Renaissance, a racist nationalist group.

Shortly after Saturday's shooting that left six dead and 14 more wounded, Fox News reported that it had obtained a law enforcement document linking Loughner to American Renaissance, adding to the speculation that racism motivated his shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who is Jewish.

Several other media outlets then pounced on the possible connection.

Now, the website Politico is reporting that the document was purely speculative from early law enforcement research, and was not meant to provide any conclusions.

"I do have no reason to believe in anything that we did that (Loughner) had any direct connection or was being directed by American Renaissance," David Denlinger, commander of the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center, told POLITICO.

For its part, American Renaissance spokesman Jared Taylor also denied any link to Loughner, writing on its website: "No one by the name of Loughner has ever been a subscriber to American Renaissance or has ever registered for an American Renaissance conference. We have no evidence that he has even visited the AR website."
