Reports: Julie Christie Weds

It's quite a season for veteran British actress Julie Christie. "Away From Her" - one of her rare film appearances - has won her SAG, Golden Globe and National Board of Review awards and landed her an Oscar nomination. And now, the woman who once said she saw no reason to ever marry, has apparently wed her longtime partner, CBS News correspondent Sheila MacVicar reports.

Christie, the reluctant celebrity, has made a stunning return to the silver screen playing a woman increasingly lost to herself and her husband as Alzheimer's disease takes hold.

It was a part she had to be coaxed to take.

"Julie Christie is something of a recluse, not just from life itself but basically from the whole sort of Hollywood shebang as it were," said columnist Neal Sean.

The actress has been with British journalist Duncan Campbell for twenty-eight years. According to newspaper reports in the U.K. - including Campbell's paper the Guardian - Christie decided at 66 it was time to tie the knot so the couple wed in a secret ceremony in India two months ago.

"He's very studious, very educated and she's always been about broadening her mind, her appeal, that sort of stuff," said Sean. "The dynamics work very well together."

Christie's brother Clive Christie confirmed to the U.K.'s Daily Mail newspaper that the wedding had taken place, but that he did not attend the event.

When asked to confirm the wedding, Campbell said: "Really? Well, I never get into stories like that."

If the marriage took place in a registry office in India, reports MacVicar, it will be recognized in the U.K. giving both Christie and her new husband - both of them in their late sixties - more protection from tax and inheritance costs.

Christie once said that being a celebrity was like "always having chewing gum stuck in your hair."

While she has hinted "Away From Her" may be her last film, it seems she has a little more celebrity to contend with.
