Reporter: Sanford Sad And Frustrated

The South Carolina newspaper reporter who helped bust open the story of Gov. Mark Sanford's Argentine affair said both she and the governor were surprised to see each other at the airport when he landed Wednesday in Atlanta.

Gina Smith said the newspaper had gradually received allegations of the governor's infidelity, but didn't get the smoking gun - an admission - until their encounter at the airport.

Smith described Sanford in three words to CBS' The Early Show Thursday: "Sad, dejected, frustrated."

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Sanford told the media he had been having an affair with a woman in Argentina. Smith's newspaper, The State, later released e-mails sent between the governor and his South American lover.
