Report: 2 charged in death of child left near space heater

DETROIT – A Detroit man and woman are charged in the death of a 1-year-old boy they were caring for who apparently died from burns sustained from a space heater, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Sandford McQueen, 22, and Karen Geletzke, 23, were arraigned Monday on charges of second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse, according to the paper. Both are being held without bail.

Police were called to a home in Detroit Thursday and found the child, identified by the paper as Tyrease Burton, unresponsive and suffering from what appeared to be burn marks. The child was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital, according to CBS Detroit.

A medical examiner has reportedly determined the 1-year-old died of burns and ruled the death a homicide.

The Detroit Free Press reports the child had been placed in a stroller and covered with a blanket near a space heater.
