Regis A Player In Millionaire Match
There are 28 weekdays left until Christmas arrives. And The Early Show is counting them down with toy store FAO Schwarz where you can find a new video game version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
CBS News Early Show Co-Anchor Jane Clayson asked the show's host Regis Philbin if he had a chance to play it yet.
PHILBIN: Oh, I never get a chance to play it. I'm the guy always asking the questions, and I've always wondered how smart I would be behind there. Of course, the pressure of the studio is not here, but nevertheless, the questions are.
CLAYSON: So how far have you made it?
PHILBIN: I got up to $2,000.
CLAYSON: Two?
PHILBIN: Every stack of questions is different. It just depends on your background, your educational background and your experience through life that equips you for that particular stack of questions. Do you want to do a round?
CLAYSON: Let's do it...
PHILBIN: OK...
CLAYSON: Do you want to play Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
PHILBIN: That's it. Good, Jane Clayson.
CLAYSON: All right. First question, for $100, Regis -- In most countries what color uniforms do UPS drivers wear?
PHILBIN: Brown, Final answer, yes.
CLAYSON: "C" -- brown.
PHILBIN: Yes, got it.
CLAYSON: $100.
PHILBIN: Look at that applause streaking through FAO Schwarz.
CLAYSON: So are you still surprised at the success of Millionaire?
PHILBIN: Well, yeah, you know, I mean, the ratings are not as high as they were when it came out, because it was an absolute blockbuster when it came out. (But) if you look at the top 10 list every week, you'll see four Millionaires in there.
CLAYSON: And Celebrity Millionaire has really been a hit, too?
PHILBIN: And Celebrity Millionaire has been a real powerhouse this week. Yeah, we're having a lot of fun. We're stunting a little more. We've had families on. We've had college kids trying to pay off their college loans on. We've had the Olympians on. So it's fun to get a category of celebrity or not celebrity, put them into the playing game and see how they do.
CLAYSON: Have you calculated how much money you gave away?
PHILBIN: The last time we did, it was $44 million. That was a few months ago. So I would assume we're over $50 million now.
CLAYSON: I have to ask you, why do you say Who WANTS To Be A Millionaire, instead of Who Wants To Be A MILLIONAIRE, or WHO Wants To Be A Millionaire?
PHILBIN: Everyone is asking me that. Am I saying it wrong? Who WANTS To BE A Millionaire? Is that the way I should say it?
CLAYSON: Who Wants To Be A MILLIONAIRE?
PHILBIN: Starting tonight, you got it.
CLAYSON: We'll look for it, Regis. Thanks You can pick up the new hand-held game for about $25.
