Recover a Lost or Stolen Android Phone
"Ay, yo, if your smartphone is so flippin' smart, how come it can't report itself lost or stolen?" (Don't know why I felt the need to channel a Jersey dude just then.)
That's the idea behind iHound, an app that helps recover missing Android phones. (If the name sounds familiar, that's because I wrote about the iPhone version a few months back.)
Every 10 minutes, the app wakes itself up, determines your phone's location (via its GPS and/or data signals), and reports in to the iHound servers. If your phone goes missing, you can sign into the iHound site and pinpoint its location on a map.
You can also lock your phone remotely and, if necessary, wipe selected categories of information (such as text messages, contacts, etc.). The service even lets you activate a siren or send an instant message right to the phone. ("Ay, youse better bring back my Droid before I come over there and crack ya skull.")
The only thing that bugs me about iHound is that there's no mention of pricing anywhere on the developer's site. I do know that the app itself is free and comes with a 7-day trial of the service. After that, well, it's anybody's guess. The iPhone version costs $10.99 per year, so that's probably the rate here as well.
Worth it? Absolutely. But it irks me that iHound Software goes to such lengths to hide its pricing information -- almost to the point where I'd say look for another app. Your thoughts?
Update: Squeaky-wheel alert! After reading my post, iHound updated its site to include subscription pricing, which is $9.99 per year (payable via PayPal).
