Real Madrid signs 7-year-old Argentine prospect
(CBS/AP) In 2004, Freddy Adu made headlines in the U.S. when he became one of the youngest athletes ever to sign a pro contract.
When the soccer prodigy took the field for D.C. United, he was just 14.
Which happens to be twice as old as Argentinian soccer prospect Leonel Angel Coira, who just signed a contract with soccer powerhouse Real Madrid.
According to the AP, Coira signed with the Spanish club and will begin training next month.
Argentine sports daily Ole reports Madrid, the world's biggest club, made the push to sign Coira with Spanish league rival Atletico Madrid also pursuing the youngster.
Seven years old may seem pretty young to sign a pro contract but Coira has nothing on Baerke van der Meij of the Netherlands.
Baerke was signed this year by Dutch team Venlose Voetbal Vereniging after a clip of him showing his soccer prowess went viral.
Baerke is 18 - months old.
Yes, the signing may have been a PR stunt but the toddler sure knows how to play. Check out the clip below:
