Rating Summer Movies
The Phantom Menace isn't the only movie in the galaxy. With such stars as Will Smith, Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Tom Cruise, and Nicole Kidman returning the the big screen, it looks like it's going to be a busy summer for movie theaters across the U.S.
CBS This Morning asked Jess Cagle, senior editor at Entertaiment Weekly magazine, to assess the pick of the crop for the movie summer of '99.
- Notting Hill and The Runaway Bride: Move over, Star Wars. The force may be with Julia Roberts.
Cagle: "Julia Roberts, after this summer with Notting Hill and The Runaway Bride, could sort of come to be known as the girl of summer."
Roberts teams up with Hugh Grant in the romantic romp Notting Hill and, later in the summer, she reunites with Pretty Woman co-star Richard Gere in The Runaway Bride.CBSJess Cagle Cagle: "Paramount will tell you over and over again, it's not Pretty Woman 2. But it's got all the elements: Julia, Richard Gere, and director Garry Marshall."
- Wild, Wild West: For the third time, Will Smith will open a movie on Fourth of July weekend. He has made a big bang in the past with Independence Day and Men in Black.
Cagle: "Nobody said that the third time is the charm, and certainly there's been some bad buzz on Wild, Wild West. That seems to be turning around, and Will Smith owns that [July 4] weekend."
- Eyes Wide Shut: This might be the summer's most intriguing movie, as it is director Stanley Kubrick's last film and it stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
Cagle: "Very little is known about Eyes Wide Shut. I think people in the media and in Hollywood are more eager to see this movie (because it's Stanley Kubrick) than normal moviegoersÂ… I think you're looking at the world's most publicized art-house film."
