"Raising Hope" Adds More Comedy to Fox's Tuesday Lineup
NEW YORK (CBS) "Raising Hope," a sitcom about an aimless 23-year-old who becomes a single dad, had its series premiere on Tuesday night,.
The show focuses on Jimmy Chance (Lucas Neff), a pool cleaner who wakes up one day to discover he's now a father - the baby was result of a one-night stand with a woman now on death row.
He decides that raising the titular baby Hope will become his new purpose in life, and brings her home to live with him and his offbeat family.
Martha Plimpton steals scenes as his dysfunctional mother Virginia, who tells Jimmy to drop the baby off at a fire station. "Make sure you hand it to someone," she explains. "You can't just throw it in the bin outside - I think that's for canned goods and puppies."
Jimmy's family also includes dad Burt (Garret Dillahunt) and his batty grandmother, Maw Maw (Cloris Leachman).
Reviews for the show were generally positive. The New York Times speculated it may be "the best new sitcom of the season," while New York Magazine's Vulture blog said the pilot had "brass and confidence."
