Queen Elizabeth honors her silver-screen mom

(CBS/AP) LONDON - Queen Elizabeth II is honoring the film star who played her mother in "The King's Speech" at Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

Actress Helena Bonham Carter, 45, whose regal roles also include the Red Queen in "Alice in Wonderland," has been honored by the British monarch for services to drama.

Bonham Carter was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, or CBE, by the queen at a palace ceremony attended by her husband, director Tim Burton, and children Billy, 8, and Nell, 4.

Her films range from costume dramas such as "A Room With a View" to edgier fare like "Fight Club" and the sci-fi "Planet of the Apes." She also played scheming witch Bellatrix Lestrange in the popular Harry Potter films.

The London-born star, who has been acting since she was a teen, is the great-granddaughter of former British Prime Minister Herbert H. Asquith. She was nominated for an Oscar last year for "The King's Speech" and in 1998 for "The Wings of the Dove."

Anyone familiar with Bonham Carter's fashion choices is probably wondering what she wore for her big day at the palace. Known for her bohemian style sense, Bonham Carter wore a red tartan-patterned dress and miniature top hat.
