DANGEROUS DOGS
Caged Dog

Every decade, a particular breed of dog becomes a "fad" dog. Deservedly or not, these canines are regarded as aggressive and often, unpredictably vicious.

In the 60s, the German Shepherd gained this title. Images from the Civil Rights movement helped to cement the idea of the German Shepherd as a vicious attack dog. The 70s ushered in the age of the Doberman Pincher, with its elongated, powerful body and fierce demeanor. The 80s saw the rise of the Pit Bull as America's preeminent dangerous dog. Stocky powerful, and often favored by criminals and drug dealers, Pit Bulls are still struggling to shed their negative image. In the 90s, as you may have learned from our broadcast, the Rottweiler took over the mantle of 'vicious dog.'
