Probe Sought At Army Retirement Home

Today, CBS News cameras were allowed inside the Armed Services Retirement Home, which is overseen by the Department of Defense, CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports.

"We welcome anybody to come, though," says Timothy Cox, head of the home.

It's damage control after two senators wrote Defense Secretary Robert Gates today demanding an immediate investigation into allegations of poor quality health care at the home after a government probe cited everything from allegations of rising deaths to feces-spattered rooms, and patients with severe bed sores including one with maggots.

"This was a resident who was uncooperative in his care, which doesn't excuse what our staff did. We did find a maggot in the wound," Cox says.

Cox says he fired eight people after that case of neglect last August.

But one of the most troubling allegations is that officials at the home have retaliated against residents who've questioned the quality of their care.

Armed Forces Retirement Home officials say there's no retaliation, and they're proud of their care. But Congress is all over the case. In the shadow of the Walter Reed debacle, nobody wants to be accused of minimizing veterans' health.
