Prince William says he and Kate want 2 children

(CBS/AP) SINGAPORE - Prince William says he wants to have two children with his wife Kate. The British royal has spoken often in the past about wanting to start a family but had not given specific numbers.

The revelation came Wednesday while the royal couple was touring Singapore. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are on a nine-day tour of the Far East and South Pacific in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.

"Someone asked him how many children he would like to have, and he said he was thinking about having two," student Corine Ackermann said.

Kate added fuel to the royal baby fascination by drinking water instead of wine during a toast on the trip. A palace spokesperson told CBS News, "There are a thousand reasons someone might not drink wine."

(In the video below, Gayle King reports Kate drank water instead of wine in a recent toast.

The royal couple also visited a Rolls Royce jet engine factory in Singapore, touring the complex Wednesday and unveiling the first engine produced by the plant, which opened earlier this year.

It was the couple's second day in Singapore, which is the first stop on their tour. They'll also visit the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.

The royal couple has been interacting with the public intimately for the first time on this trip, CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reported. You didn't even have to look in order to tell how far away the couple was - you could hear them approach as the roar of the crowd got louder.

Many gathered along the way told CBS News the biggest attraction wasn't where the couple visited, but the royal couple itself.

Asked what about the couple is exciting, one 14-year-old girl said, "They're royalty. They're the perfect couple."

Another said, "They're such a cute couple and they're really romantic."

The girls - who ditched class to see the couple - stood with hundreds of others in the searing sun to see the royals.

One of the girls even got to meet Kate. She said, "I told her she looked beautiful and she said, 'Well, it's a bit hard in this heat' - but, yeah, it was incredible."
