The 91-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II was taken from the royal family's Balmoral estate in Scotland to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Wednesday.

"The Duke of Edinburgh is responding well to treatment. It is unclear when he will be discharged, but he is likely to remain in hospital for a few more days," the palace said in a statement Thursday, according to the Press Association.

It is Philip's third hospital stay in the last eight months. He was hospitalized for five days in June with a bladder infection that may have been aggravated by his appearance at a flotilla for the queen's Diamond Jubilee, marking her 60-year reign.

In December, he underwent a successful coronary stent procedure to clear a blocked artery after experiencing chest pains.
