(CBS) Since its American debut with the 1930s hit "Beer Barrel Polka," the popularity of polka in the U.S. has managed to grow in spite of itself.Today, the polka circuit boasts more than 800 bands, a Polka Music Hall of Fame, and a category at the Grammy Awards. (The polka Grammys are handed out before the cameras start recording.) As if that weren't enough, the 21st annual International Polkafest in Chisholm, Minnesota draws some 15,000 enthusiasts from around the nation, all eager to dance in 2/4 time to 30 top-name bands. Frankie Yankovic, the undisputed Polka King, did a lot to spread the polka beat in the '40s and '50s. Today's polka proponents hope to keep polka alive for the next generation by engaging artists from other genres. Willie Nelson, who started out playing in a polka band in Texas, recently contributed to the album Polka! All Night Long. Watch for other top music stars to get in on the action, too. The International Polkafest features Slovenian and German as well as Polish polka. Extras to expect are a polka mass and an exhibition of musical instruments. Past performers have included a band led by Myron Floren of the old Lawrence Welk Show. You may never look at lederhosen the same way again. Venue Information:
