Politics And Prizes At MTV Awards (1998)

The MTV Music Video Awards Thursday night were a pageant of fun, fantasy, fashion, and a touch of freakiness. But the presidential crisis was on the minds of many artists, reports CBS News Correspondent Bill Whitaker.

Rob Zombie: "Our president lied to us? Holy smoke! What a concept!"

Shaquille O'Neal: "Whatever the president wants to do, I'm with the president. If Hillary isn't worried about it, I'm not worried about it."

Will Smith: "I was at the inauguration. I think Bill Clinton has been an incredible president."

Sean "Puffy" Combes: "He got our economy up. He's been a great president."

Others had praise for first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, and many said they thought impeachment would be too harsh a punishment for the president.

As far as the awards themselves, the night belonged to Madonna, who mixed Middle Eastern facial paint with Western-style sequins and pumps. She kept her speeches brief, but took home six awards.
