(CBS/AP/Reuters) ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Authorities say a former student of Elizabeth City State University returned to the school with an assault rifle Saturday and was shot and wounded by campus police.

University Police Chief Samuel Beamon says officers saw 24-year-old Rashaad Gardner with an AK-47 assault rifle after they spotted students running away. They proceeded to shoot him in the right thigh.

The Daily Advance reports that Gardner was brought to the hospital, but has since been released. He is currently in Albemarle District Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Campus officials say it was unclear what the cause of the confrontation was. ECSU sophomore Derek Davis says there was fighting outside campus dorms and bottles being thrown before the shooting occurred.
