Inmate escapes Pa. jail due to name mix-up
UNIONTOWN, Pa. - A western Pennsylvania inmate apparently took advantage of county jail guards confused by similar sounding names, who released her to a bail bondsman.
But Evelyn Grace Campbell wasn't supposed to go free. Now she's facing an escape charge after Friday's mixup.
That's when a bail bondman showed up to post $500 bail on behalf of another inmate named Maretta Ruth Gamble.
Fayette County Warden Brian Miller believes it was Campbell who stepped forward when the guards called for Gamble - and then escaped after telling the bail bondsman she didn't have identification before he apparently let her sign the release papers.
Miller says the guards and bail bondsman should have had photos of both women. The mix-up is being investigated by the jail.
CBS Pittsburgh reports Campbell is serving a three to six month sentence on theft charges.
The warden says the 29-year-old Campbell, of Uniontown, is back in the county lockup after turning herself in Saturday afternoon.
In any case, the next time someone asks "What's in a name," you've got a new story to tell.
