The shooting took place at the Army Medical Department Center and School at about 2:50 p.m., the Army said in a statement. Base spokesman Brent Boller said the gunman surrendered to San Antonio police and the female victim is in stable condition.

The shooting was part of an apparent domestic dispute between the two, who were at one time romantically involved, Javier Salazar, SAPD spokesman, told CBS affiliate KENS-TV.

Salazar said the woman was serving on active duty, but the man is not in the military.

KENS Chopper 5 was on the scene by about 3:15 p.m. and broadcast images of one victim being rolled on a stretcher to an ambulance.
