Police fatally shoot man allegedly wielding knife near Boston University

BOSTON - A man who was allegedly wielding a knife near Boston University was shot and killed by police Friday afternoon, reports CBS Boston.

People who saw the shooting told media reporters that police opened fire as the man approached officers with a knife on the Silber Footbridge over Storrow Drive.

Witnesses told The Boston Globe they saw a shirtless man running along the Esplanade and he was hit by a van. They say the man kept running, and several police officers jumped out of the van and gave chase.

Ed Davis, former commissioner of the Boston Police Department who now works as a security analyst for CBS Boston, told the station he was driving on Storrow Drive Friday when he saw a man running along the road with a knife in hand.

At one point, according to Davis, the man approached officers, who were yelling for the man to drop the knife.

Davis said it was at that point that police shot and killed the suspect.

No officers were injured in the incident.

During a news conference Friday, state police said the suspect has a lengthy criminal history, but did not elaborate.
