Police Fatally Shoot L.A. Home Invasion Suspect, Rescue Five People Bound Alive
LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) Police shot and killed a home invasion robbery suspect in a South Los Angeles home where authorities say they rescued five people found bound inside early Monday morning.
Sgt. Christopher Wilbourn said two men forced their way into a couple's home at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday.
The husband managed to slip away and frantically called police from a neighbor's home telling officers that two men were inside his home. When officers arrived they called on the suspects to give themselves up, according to CBS Newsradio affiliate KNX.
But when the suspects did not respond, officers feared the worst for the residents and entered the home. Police shot one suspect, armed with a Tec-9 pistol, several times as he was trying to escape. Authorities said he later died at a local hospital.
The second suspect was arrested inside the home.
One resident was taken to a hospital for minor injuries, but was later released, reports The Los Angeles Times.
Officer Sara Faden of the Los Angeles Police Department said an investigation into the shooting will be opened and it was unknown if the slain suspect aimed his gun at officers, reports the paper.
Neither suspect has been identified.
