Police: Children found in "deplorable conditions" in Calif. home
SOLANO COUNTY, Calif. - Three people are facing child abuse charges after authorities in Solano County, Calif. say they found four children living in deplorable conditions, reports CBS Sacramento.
According to the station, sheriff's deputies were alerted to the situation after one of the children made a frantic call to a family member.
Tiffany Sanchez says she received the call Wednesday, Aug. 5, and immediately made an excuse to pick up her half-sister. Sanchez then took the girl to the Solano County Sheriff's Office to file a report of abuse.
"Based on that, deputies performed a welfare check of residence. Our investigators interviewed a child and served a search warrant in the 6000 block of California Pacific road and Elmira," said Christine Castillo with the sheriff's department.
"Deputies found the home to be in deplorable condition. It was not habitable for anyone -- let alone children," Castillo added, according to CBS Sacramento.
Elbert McPike, 36, and Stepheney Shannon, 34, were arrested on multiple counts of child endangerment. A 14-year-old boy was also reportedly arrested on sexual abuse charges.
Four juveniles were reportedly taken from the home and placed in protective custody. Detectives say at least one was the victim of physical and sexual abuse.
"They are safer where they're at and they're happy. They're thriving and they're telling me they feel safe for the first time in their lives," she told the station.
