Pole vaulter Dmitry Starodubstev had a bad day

(CBS) - Yikes! Pole vaulting in general seems like a sport just begging for freaky-scary accidents. What good can come from using a flexible pole to launch yourself far higher than humans should reasonably be launched?

Russian pole vaulter Dmitry Starodubtsev knows what I'm talking about.

While attempting to vault almost 19-feet (5.75 meters) in the air, Starodubtsev's pole snapped like a fresh carrot. Luckily, the Russian fell onto the mat and not the concrete track. Sadly, he was unable to continue and had to bow out of the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Incredibly, the same thing happened to Czech vaulter Jan Kudlicka at the same height.

Mama, don't let your kids grow up to be pole vaulters.
