(CBS) "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is barely out in the United States and already it's earning tons of cash, thanks to big grosses overseas.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fourth "Pirates" film earned $25.7 million on Thursday alone at the international box office. Its two-day total is $44.2 million.

The Johnny Depp-starring film opens in 4,155 theaters Friday in the U.S. and if the overseas tallies are any indication, the negative reviews the film has been getting stateside will not deter audiences.

A.O. Scott writes in the New York Times,

"'On Stranger Tides' is protected from the consequences of its own mediocrity by the mere fact that it is opening in thousands of theaters on Friday. People will go, and more energy will be expended parsing the box-office returns than discussing the merits of the film, which is likely to be judged entertaining enough and therefore, in the end, not much fun at all."

Peter Travers is less kind in Rolling Stone, writing, "Pirates 4 is infected with the repetitive action and blathering incoherence that scuttled its predecessors."

Not all the reviews are negative. Our own Karina Mitchell writes, "The rapport on screen between the sultry firecracker [Penelope Cruz] and Depp is scintillating."
