Philadelphia taxi firms file suit against Uber X

PHILADELPHIA - A group of 45 Philadelphia taxi companies have filed suit in federal court against the ride-sharing service Uber X, calling the app-based enterprise unfair competition against medallion owners who have to operate under state laws and regulations.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that lead litigant Checker Cab Philadelphia and the others accused Uber X in Tuesday's suit of operating an illegal enterprise under the federal racketeering law and being in "blatant violation" of federal and state laws.

The firm has said it hopes to work with Pennsylvania lawmakers and regulators in offering ridesharing.

Uber X last month won an experimental license to arrange private rides throughout much of Pennsylvania, but not Philadelphia, but the state Public Utility Commission called the two-year license a "last chance" to cooperate with regulators.
