Petra Nemcova In Focus Again
Officials in Thailand have identified the remains of British photographer Simon Atlee, who was swept out to sea during December's massive tsunami, which almost claimed the life of his girlfriend, supermodel Petra Nemcova.
CBS News Correspondent Trish Regan observes that Nemcova has become one of the most famous victims of the tsunami. The Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover girl was vacationing in Thailand with Atlee when the tsunami hit.
"Petra and Simon heard some children screaming and as they did, that was sort of the last thing that they heard," says Faith Kates, who owns Next Model Management, the agency that represents Nemcova.
Kates has spoken to the 25-year-old nearly every day since the disaster.
"She wound up holding onto a tree for eight hours with broken bones and a broken pelvis," Kates reminded Regan.
Nemcova struggled to save her own life and says she felt powerless to save others.
The Victoria's Secret model spent two weeks in a Thai hospital, visited often by her sister. She then returned to her native Czech Republic, where she is undergoing daily therapy, learning to walk all over again.
"She's taking small steps and she's walking with crutches," Kates says. "And the good news is…she'll walk again" and her injuries won't linger for the rest of her life."
Asked by Regan whether she thinks Nemcova will ever resume her modeling career, as it once was, Kates responded, "You know, I don't want to speak for what she's going to do, but I think she'll do whatever she feels is right for her to do."
For now, says Regan, that means Nemcova has decided not to go back to modeling. Instead, she'll be a model citizen, dedicated to raising money for the tiniest tsunami victims.
