"Pervert" letters in Maine mailboxes, man arrested

KENNEBUNK, Maine - Police have arrested a man suspected of leaving disturbing notes in residents' mailboxes in Southern Maine warning that their children may be in danger. Each note was signed, "Pervert," reports CBS Boston.

Police say two of the alarming notes were left in Kennebunk mailboxes and another was left in a mailbox in Arundel.

The notes reportedly read, "I will not stay away from your kids. Your friend, Pervert."

The suspect, Robert Simkowitz, 39, of Old Orchard Beach, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two misdemeanor counts of criminal threatening, according to CBS Boston.

Police say Simkowitz is not a registered sex offender and authorities do not believe that he knew the victims.

Security cameras captured an image of a man, believed to be the suspect, dropping a letter in the mailbox of one victim. The picture was then circulated by authorities and it eventually led police to tips which then led to Simkowitz's arrest, reports the station.

"I just had the goosebumps everywhere," said Dianne Falconer, who received one of the letters. "No matter how old your children get you still worry about them."

CBS Chicago reported earlier this week that an Indiana mother received a letter over the weekend from someone threatening to kidnap her daughters.

"You have two lovely daughters... I and my friend have watched them ever since they moved in... almost had them on Thursday evening, will keep trying... Thank you!," that letter read, in part.

No arrests have been made in that case.
