Pavarotti Undergoes Surgery

Opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti is said to be "recovering well" from surgery for pancreatic cancer.

His manager, Terri Robson, tells The Associated Press that doctors discovered a malignant pancreatic mass shortly before he was to go to Britain to resume a singing schedule. In her words, "fortunately, the mass was able to be completely removed."

Robson says this will force Pavarotti to cancel all his concerts this year. Earlier complications from back surgery had forced the 70-year-old tenor to postpone some June dates on his Worldwide Farewell Tour, including one stop in the United States.

Robson says Pavarotti's doctors are encouraged by what she calls his "physical and emotional resilience."

The singer remains hospitalized, but Robson will not say where.
