Actor Paul Dano will portray Brian Wilson in the upcoming film, "Love and Mercy."
Bill Pohlad is set to direct the movie about the Beach Boys star. Dano will play a young Wilson, while another actor will be cast to portray Wilson later in life.
"Love and Mercy," named after one of Wilson's solo songs, will follow the singer-songwriter's life -- as a budding star in the Beach Boys, highlighting his mental illness and marriage.
"Rather than a bio pic, the film will take an unconventional look at seminal moments in Wilson's life, his artistic genius, his profound struggles, and the love that kept him alive," a press release explains.
"I am thrilled that Paul Dano has signed on to play me during one of my most creative explosions and most fulfilling musical times in my career," Wilson said in a statement. "I still can't believe how cool it is that my life will be portrayed on the big screen, and to have Bill Pohlad as the captain of the Sloop John B is amazing. It just makes me feel so humble. I can't wait to see it with a full tub of buttered popcorn."
Atticus Ross, who wrote the music for "The Social Network" with Trent Reznor, is in talks to compose the film's score and soundtrack, which will feature Wilson's music.
Pohlad has been a producer on "The Tree of Life" and "Into the Wild."
Dano has appeared in "Ruby Sparks," "Looper," "There Will Be Blood" and "Little Miss Sunshine."
Wilson was on the road last year with a reunited Beach Boys.
