Patti Smith to co-write "Just Kids" film

(CBS) Patti Smith's award-winning memoir "Just Kids" is getting the movie treatment.

Smith will work with Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan to adapt the book into a screenplay.

"Just Kids" chronicles Smith's friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The memoir won the 2010 National Book Award for nonfiction and spent 37 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list.

Logan won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play for the drama "Red." His screenwriting credits include "Gladiator," "The Aviator," "Sweeney Todd" and "Rango."

In addition, Smith is working on a sequel to "Just Kids," according to Rolling Stone, and working on a new album to be released next year.
