Palm Springs Gala: Dress Rehearsal [Pictures] for Golden Globes

NEW YORK (CBS) All of this year's crop of Oscar hopefuls began their red-carpet circuits this week at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

It was here that Natalie Portman showed off her engagement ring, Jake Gyllenhaal shed his tie and dropped some expletives and James Franco gave a preview of what audiences can expect at the Oscars.

The black-tie event, which raises money for the nonprofit Palm Springs Film Society, is highlighted by a series of film clips and awards. "Entertainment Tonight"'s Mary Hart was the host.

The evening's events included a tribute to slain Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen

The award winners were:

Jennifer Lawrence, the Rising Star Award

Carey Mulligan, the Breakthrough Performance Award

Javier Bardem, the International Star Award

Diane Warren, the Frederick Loewe Music Award

David O. Russell, the Director of the Year Award

Colin Firth, the Desert Palm Achievment Actor Award

Danny Boyle, the Sonny Bono Visionary Award

Natalie Portman, the Desert Palm Achievment Actress Award

Robert Duvall, the Career Achievement Award

"The Social Network," the Ensemble Performance Award

Ben Affleck, the Chairman's Award
