Pakistani Bombing
Pakistani officials suspect today's well coordinated but poorly executed attack was masterminded by Osama bin Ladin, who already has a five million dollar price tag on his head for the bombings of American embassies in Africa. Today nine rockets fired within two minutes of each other from the backs of cars.
Â"I have seen with my own eyes. There were two rocket launchers each in the vehicles that are burning here.Â"
The rockets exploded near the the U.S. Embassy and an American cultural center, as well as a U.N. building and Pakistani government buildings.
Â"The projectiles struck the fence surrounding the American center, and the center was hit by shrapnel from that explosion.,Â" said tk Rubin.
A Pakistani guard was injured, but no Americans hurt, although the U.S. and U.N. buildings were almost certainly the intended targets, in retaliation for the economic sanctions which are about to be imposed on the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan if they do not hand over bin Laden to stand trial.
Earlier this week, the Taliban leader publicly warned Americans, "You will be surprised about what is coming to you," if the sanctions are allowed to take effect.
U.S. officials say it certainly appears today's attack is linked to the sanctions, but they have no specific evidence implicating either the Taliban or bin Laden.
The weapons in today's attack appear to have been homemade , much less sophisticated than what either the Taliban or bin Laden are capable of. But those are just appearances. What is needed is evidence and to that end the FBI is sending a team of investigators to Pakistan.
