Outdoor Firepits To Keep You Warm
Colder weather has arrived, but you can continue to enjoy your patio or deck with a little help from outdoor firepits and other similar products.
Susanna Salk, special projects editor from House & Garden magazine, visits The Saturday Early Show to talk about some of her favorites, as well as some other accessories that can make your outdoor space warm and cozy.
"Watching a flame beats watching TV any time," Salk says.
Here are the fireplaces featured:
30" Fire Bowl w/ Bench from Target
Available at: www.target.com
Cost: $79.99
This is the least expensive item featured. Best of all, it will last for years and you can use it most months of the year, so you definitely get your money's worth, Salk says.
34" Copper Firepit from Frontgate
Available at: www.frontgate.com or 800-533-7502
Cost: $249
This firepit lies on the other side of the price spectrum from the Target version. It has a copper base, and can serve as a centerpiece in your yard.
Westbury Firepit from Simth & Hawken
Available at: www.smithandhawken.com
Cost: $279
Different in shape and style, it almost looks like a coffee table or a side table. A removable basin makes it easy to clean.
Backyard Firepit from Smith & Hawken
Cost: $149
This firepit is lightweight which means you can pick it up and lug it to the beach or anywhere else. The one featured has a Spark Screen ($39).
Sun Chiminea from Chiminea Express/Final Touches
Available at: www.chiminea.net
Cost: $149
It is not a firepit, but a chiminea, which looks a little bit like a pot-bellied stove. Centuries ago, Mexican craftsmen designed chimineas and used them as bread ovens. This one is made from clay — the traditional chiminea material — and comes with a cast iron stand and a matching clay lid that protects the inside of the chiminea from rain, snow, etc. Salk says it looks great inside, lit by candles.
Cast Iron Chiminea from Chimineas Inc.
Available at: www.chimineasinc.com / 888-568-6967
Cost: $217
This green chiminea has a decorative leaf motif. It can burn wood, charcoal or artificial logs. If you have little kids, this might not be the best choice because the iron gets very, very hot.
Other accessories Salk likes are:
Log Basket — Salk says this is an essential item; a basket will keep your logs neat and conveniently located. Here are the items featured:
Blankets — all washable and all from L.L. Bean (www.llbean.com)
Binoculars — always fun to have around outside. (www.llbean.com)
Outdoor rug — it can really define and dress up an outdoor space, turning a patio or deck into another room. The rug featured is from Frontgate. It can be hosed off and is very soft. $19 to $119.
