NEW YORK (CBS) The 2011 Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday -- and as always, there were a few performances that were questionably overlooked by the Academy.

While Natalie Portman received  the expected  Best Actress nod for her role in "Black Swan," neither of her two female costars, Mila Kunis and Barbara Hershey, received any recognition in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Christopher Nolan was passed over in the Best Director group, even though his film "Inception" was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

The supporting-acting categories failed to mention Julianne Moore of "The Kids Are All Right" and Andrew Garfield from "The Social Network." Both stars earned Golden Globe nods for their respective roles. And their co-stars, Jessie Eisenberg ("The Social Network"), Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo, all got Oscar nods.

Also on the snubs list: "The Town" was ignored in the Best Picture category, and Ryan Gosling failed to earn a Best Actor nomination. However, Gosling's "Blue Valentine" co-star, Michelle Williams, was recognized in the Best Actress group for her role

"Get Low" failed to win nominations for its two stars, Robert Duvall and Bill Murray, even though both won critical acclaim and Duvall had a Golden Globes nomination. Also, sentimental favorite Michael Douglas came up empty. Douglas, who has been battling throat cancer and got a standing ovation at the Golden Globes ceremony, was nominated for a Golden Globe for "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and generated Oscar buzz early in the year for his role in "A Solitary Man."

Finally, "Black Swan," with its elaborate Rodarte-designed ballet outfits, failed to win a nomination for costume design.
