Organizing Your Kid's Room: A Plan

In order to help you start leading an uncluttered life, The Early Show offers a three-part series on organizing with the help of Peter Walsh, the professional organizer on TLC's "Clean Sweep."

Walsh has written the book, "How To Organize Just About Everything," and on Monday morning, he demonstrates his expertise, by organizing a kid's room or play space.

When it comes to kids' rooms, Walsh's philosophy is creating different "stations" so the child will understand where everything should go.

For example, if the child likes doing creative projects, you should have an area set up with an easel and supplies (and an easy-to-clean floor). The child then learns that's where those materials should stay and be put away.

Or, if the child loves to play board games, you need an area with a flat surface and low shelves to stack the games within reach. If the child is small and plays with Legos, have a low bin with a Lego or a picture of a Lego on the front so he can see that's where the Legos go.

One of the most important parts of organizing a child's play space or room is to ensure that the child can actually reach his or her things, in order to participate in the cleaning process.

Walsh also believes in helping children create limits, so they understand why things need to be thrown out or donated periodically, rather than just saving everything and ending up right where you started.
