Oreo's Owner Gets His Just Deserts
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (CBS) At Crimesider we are continually surprised by the horrors people do to each other. And while we don't understand the end result, we do often understand the motives: usually a fight about money, love or family. Everyone has those kind of battles.
But what really throws us, is violence against animals, not because we are shocked that people can be cruel, but because we don't quite see the motives.
And that brings us to the case of Oreo, a female pit bull, who, authorities say, was thrown off a six-story Brooklyn, N.Y. roof. Now, the teen police say is responsible, has been indicted on animal cruelty charges that could put him behind bars for up to two years.
If convicted, it seems Oreo's owner will get what's coming to him.
Fabian Henderson was arrested on July 31, over a month after the 19-year-old heaved Oreo from his rooftop. The dog managed to survive the six-story drop, but suffered severe injuries.
Henderson is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and "overdriving, torturing and injuring animals," according to a statement released by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.
Oreo was found lying on the sidewalk by neighbors and was brought to Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, a hospital run by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, for surgery. She suffered multiple front leg fractures and ligament damage as well as bruised lungs, a fractured rib, liver injury and internal bleeding.
Anita Kelso Edson, a spokeswoman for the ASPCA, said in a statement: "Oreo remains at the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital where veterinarians treated her shattered legs, bruised lungs and severe internal bleeding. Surgery was performed to reconstruct her front legs using plates and screws. She has a long road ahead of her before a decision will be made regarding adoption."
