(CBS) "One for the Money," the Katherine Heigl film that opens today, could be the start of a lucrative franchise for the rom-com star.

That's because it is based on the very popular mystery series by New Jersey author Janet Evanovich. There are 18 books - her "Explosive Eighteen" is on the bestseller lists this week - already out there and Evanovich doesn't appear to be done yet.

But whether the other 17 get made into movies depends on the success of this first film and how well readers of the by-the-numbers-books accept the usually blonde Heigl as curly-haired, brunette Stephanie Plum. A unconventional bounty hunter, an out-of-work Plum falls into her career after taking a job with her bail bondsman cousin.

There's lots of opportunity for action in these movies - Plum goes through cars the way other women go through nail polish - but a lot of tension relies on Plum's attraction to two men - Morelli, her childhood beau, who is now a cop, and Ranger, her dark and mysterious bounty-hunting colleague.

If Heigl can make the chemistry work with these two actors, she has got lots of work ahead.
