On Screen And Off, Hudson Is Mom
In the new film "Raising Helen," Kate Hudson plays a career woman who becomes an instant mother when she inherits her sister's three kids.
Hudson tells The Early Show co-anchor Rene Syler her character's life falls apart as she goes on her journey as a suddenly single mother.
"I think that everybody can relate to it," Hudson says. "Everybody loses people in their life and you have to survive and make life fun and laugh."
The romantic comedy is from director Garry Marshall, who made "Pretty Woman, "Runaway Bride" and "The Princess Diaries."
"It's Garry Marshal at his best. Crying, laughing, crying, laughing," Hudson says.
As the character Helen Harris, she works at a top Manhattan modeling agency, juggling a career and romance. John Corbett plays her love interest.
In real life, Hudson is also juggling career and family life with the arrival of her son, Ryder Russell Robinson, with husband, musician Chris Robinson.
"He is everything. He is 4 1/2 months. Almost 5 months," she says.
Hudson named her child after Kurt Russell, her mother's long time companion. Asked how he reacted when he found out about it, she says, "You know you have to ask Kurt, but I think he was thrilled. He raised me and he's my dad. He was really the first relationship I ever had with a man. And to be able to pass on the name and for me, to show the importance of what his family means, what his mother means to Ryder and his sisters, you know. I wanted to carry that on."
