Ohio State Coach Pleads Innocent

Ohio State offensive coordinator Mike Jacobs pleaded innocent Tuesday to beating his ex-wife, who appeared in court with a black eye and said she feared for her safety.

Franklin County Municipal Judge James Fais didn't require bail on a charge of assault, but set bond at $5,000 on a domestic violence charge, to which Jacobs pleaded innocent. Jacobs spent two nights in jail after turning himself in to police just after midnight Sunday.

Jacobs' attorney, David Winters, said bond was to be posted Tuesday.

Robbin Jacobs, visibly nervous and with a purple bruise on her left eye, testified she and her ex-husband had dinner together Friday and began arguing about dating other people. Robbin Jacobs said her ex-husband reached into her purse, grabbed an address book and went to his car.

She followed him and opened the passenger side door to try to get the book back, she said. Robbin Jacobs said he drove off while one of her legs was still hanging out the door.

Jacobs also pulled her hair and hit her in the face, she said. Once at her home, he pushed her from the car, Robbin Jacobs said.

She then called police.

Jacobs has denied doing anything improper or illegal, and his attorney hinted he would have a different version of what happened.

"While it's devastating initially and it sounds terrible, it's not necessarily so," Winters said.

Ohio State put Jacobs on paid administrative leave Monday.

Jacobs is in his fourth year as an Ohio State coach. He spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator, a position he held for nine years at West Virginia before going to Ohio State.
