(CBS/AP) PORTLAND, Ore. - Police says that officers responding to reports of a gunman on the grounds of a southeast Portland hospital shot and killed a suspect during a confrontation.

Spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson says the shooting occurred after police responded to Portland Adventist Medical Center about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Simpson said in a statement early Monday that the hospital was locked down to protect patients and staff as officers checked out a report of a man with a gun in the parking lot.

As police searched the large hospital complex, some officers encountered the suspect and shots were fired.

Simpson says that the man died at the scene but no officers were hit.

The shooting was still being investigated early Monday and no names or other details were released.
