Obama flying under the radar as GOP fights it out

With the political spotlight this week focused on South Carolina's Republican primary -- and the now five major candidates there fighting for votes at the other's expense -- Bill Plante reports that President Obama won't try to shift the spotlight his way until he delivers his State of the Union address to Congress next week.

"Obama is sort of under the radar here because all the attention is focused on the Republicans, and yet they (the Obama campaign) are working very, very hard," said Plante. "They have thousands of people already in the field doing the sort of ground-game work, calling, knocking on doors, making phone calls, and they love the fact that the Republicans are all beating up on Mitt Romney, who is the guy they've been running against from day one."

The Obama campaign's message has been focused on battling a Congress with a basement-level approval rating and on saving the middle class, both of which will be key themes in the president's annual address to lawmakers.

The run-up to the State of the Union address comes after Mr. Obama last week proposed cutting the size of the federal government, a proposal that requires congressional approval.
