NYT: Facebook in talks to hire Robert Gibbs

The New York Times reports that Facebook and Robert Gibbs, the former White House press secretary for President Barack Obama, are in talks about Gibbs possibly joining Facebook. The Times cites people briefed on the negotiations and reports that the role would be to help manage Facebook's communications.

The Times reports that Facebook wants to hire Gibbs before an initial public offering in 2012. The talks are in an early stage and there has been no formal offer made, reports the Times.

Gibbs stepped down from the press secretary job in February. Mark Knoller reported in February that gibbs had planned to offer private advice to Mr. Obama and become part of his re-election campaign in 2012.

Facebook is in the public eye often and not all of the press has been positive. To start, there's the movie "The Social Network," which paints Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg as a social-climbing nerd who desperately needs approval.

Zuckerberg has been willing to poke fun at himself, even appearing on "Saturday Night Live" with actor Jesse Eisenberg who plays him in the "The Social Network."

The Times reports that Facebook wants to build a communication team before the I.P.O.
