N.Y. toddler lucky to be alive after stroll onto road, but why did she have a bag of marijuana?

(CBS/AP) LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y. - Police in the New York hamlet of Loch Sheldrake, about 90 miles north of New York City, say a 3-year-old girl is lucky to be alive, considering she wandered onto a road Saturday afternoon and was nearly hit by a passing vehicle.

As it is, the toddler's mother has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child - a child they say was meandering on her own, and clutching a bag of marijuana.

Police say Lakeisha Owens was sleeping in her apartment around 5 p.m. Saturday when her daughter nearly became a traffic casualty. Officials say the driver pulled over, removed the child from the road and called police.

Authorities say the girl was holding a bag containing 15 grams of marijuana.

Police said Tuesday that Owens was released after her arrest on the misdemeanor charge.
