Norwood Hills To Host 2001 Senior Am
Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., has been chosen as the host site for the 2001 Senior Amateur Championship, the United States Golf Association has announced. The Championship will be played from Sept. 8-13.
Designed by Wayne Stiles and redesigned by Roger Null in 1991, Norwood Hills opened for play in 1922. It will be the fifth club in the St. Louis area to host a USGA Championship, joining Bellerive C.C., Forest Park G.C., Old Warson C.C. and St. Louis C.C. The 2001 Senior Amateur will be the first Senior Amateur to be played in Missouri.
Norwood Hills (West), which stretches more than 6,800 yards with a par 71, has a rich history of championship golf. Ben Hogan won the 1948 PGA Championship here, and Lee Trevino and Gene Littler won the St. Louis Open here in 1972 and 1973 respectively.
"We are delighted and honored to be selected as the host club for the 2001 Senior Amateur," said Bob Phillips, general chairman of the championship. "We look forward to continuing the rich tradition of top-notch golf at our club by crowning a national champion."
Prior to 2001, the USGA Senior Amateur will be conducted from Oct. 2-7, 1999, at Portland Golf Club in Portland, Ore., and from Sept. 21-28, 2000, at Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
