(CBS News) Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose made it very clear in a letter to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame organizers that he won't be attending Saturday's induction ceremony in Cleveland.

Rose wrote that his decision was a personal one, "respectfully declining" his induction as part of the rock group.

"I strongly request that I not be inducted in absentia and please know that no one is authorized nor may anyone be permitted to accept any induction for me or speak on my behalf," he noted.

But what does that mean for the Rock Hall and the rest of Guns N' Roses?

The hall said it still plans to induct Rose with the rest of the group, explaining, "We are sorry he will not be able to accept his induction in person."

Prior to Rose's announcement, Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, drummer Steven Adler, drummer Matt Sorum and keyboardist Dizzy Reed had said they would be attending this year's induction event. Some fans had hoped the band would reunite and perform at the ceremony.

Before Rose formally announced his decision this week, McKagan published a touching article on ESPN.com that explained why he planned to attend the event even tough, "We are not a band anymore, and haven't been for some time."

"The one reason that I am going to Cleveland this weekend is not to savor in some polite accolade or because an award show is that important to me," he wrote. "I am going because I have realized how important this is all to those many, many fans that supported us and believed in us, and showed up for us in droves."

Rose, meanwhile, gave various reasons for his choice.

"No offense meant to anyone but the Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony doesn't appear to be somewhere I'm actually wanted or respected," he wrote.

Green Day is expected to induct Guns N' Roses on Saturday. Other inductees include The Small Faces/Faces, Donovan, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys.
